Honda Sports EV Concept revealed in Tokyo

Following the reveal of the production bound Honda Urban EV concept in Frankfurt, Honda has revealed the second model to be based off the same electric platform – the Honda Sports EV Concept.

The Honda Sports EV Concept combines the same styling cues and design language as the Urban EV city car with the sporty proportions of a two-seater sports car.  We know it shares underpinnings with the Urban EV, and we know it’s all-electric.  It features the same high density, lightweight battery pack as the Urban EV, likely paired with two electric motors that we suspect will drive the rear wheels.

Honda has given us very little information about the Sports EV Concept though, other than to say that it “combines EV performance and AI (Artificial Intelligence) inside a compact body with the aim to realise the joy of driving the user can feel with a sense of unity with the car.”

That doesn’t really say much, however fans of the S2000 will be hoping that Honda sends this to production with similar driving dynamics – sans 9000r/min petrol engine.  Unlike the Urban EV Concept which has been confirmed for production, Honda hasn’t made any commitments regarding the Sports EV Concept.  But, if it does reach production, it’s rumoured to hit the market in 2021, a year after the Urban EV is made available in Europe.

One thing is for sure, the retro styled sports coupe concept could future proof the ideology of cars like the Mazda MX-5, with electric propulsion at the heart of it all.  The future might not be so bad after all.
