The Volvo S60 might be aging, but that hasn’t made the range topping performance model, the Volvo S60 Polestar, any less popular among the diehard fans. Thus far, we’ve seen two batches brought into SA, including the latest 4-cylinder powered models, with all of them being snapped up before they were even officially launched. Volvo South Africa will now be bringing in a 3rd batch of units, all featuring the MY18 (Model Year 2018) range of updates.
Mechanically, little changes from the last batch of Volvo S60 Polestars brought in. Power outputs are still 270kW and 470Nm from a Polestar-tuned 2.0-litre Drive-E twincharged motor, with power being directed to all 4 wheels via an 8-speed automatic transmission. 0-100km/h times remain the same at 4.7 seconds, with 0-200km/h taking a claimed 17.2 seconds. Suspension gear is still supplied by Ohlins for improved handling, while 245/35 R20 Michelin Pilot SuperSport tyres keep things glued to the road.
So what’s different for MY18 S60 Polestars then? More downforce – 30% more in fact. The Volvo S60 Polestar MY18 features a new exterior aerodynamics package that has been developed by Polestar in association with Cyan Racing – the brand’s motorsport partner. It has been engineered using data from Cyan Racing’s exploits in the World Touring Car Championship (WTCC), where the team is currently embroiled in a tight title fight.
The new aerodynamic package includes a new front splitter, side skirts, and a rear spoiler extension, all manufactured out of lightweight woven carbon fibre. These extras improve downforce by 30% over the MY17 S60 Polestar, aiding high speed grip and stability.
A couple of extra styling tweaks have been made for the MY18 Volvo S60 Polestar, including high gloss black Polestar diamond cut wheels, carbon fibre mirror housings, and the inclusion of Bursting Blue Metallic to the colour palette. The interior features new seat upholstery, blue contrast stitching, and Polestar embroidery.
Only 23 of the MY18 Volvo S60 Polestars will be brought into the country, arriving in late 2017. A solitary, special order Volvo V60 Polestar is also being brought in and will be the only one of its kind in the country.
